In smaller household setups, a Houseman with sufficient experience or training can also take on light household management duties.

The Role of a Houseman
Housemen are often employed individually, but they may also work as part of a Domestic Couple. In such arrangements, the couple typically manages the entire estate, taking care of housekeeping, cooking, maintenance, driving, and gardening. Only estates with extensive grounds, lakes, orchards, or wildlife conservation areas may require an experienced Estate Manager and additional Groundsmen.
A Houseman can be either live-in (with on-site accommodation typically provided) or live-out (requiring the candidate to reside within one hour of the property).
Responsibilities include:
- Sweeping leaves and maintaining entrance areas
- Welcoming guests and answering the door
- Driving, shopping, and running errands
- Car valeting and arranging servicing and MOTs
- Assisting with gardening tasks, lawn mowing, maintaining kitchen gardens, and harvesting produce
- Handling household maintenance and DIY tasks (those with plumbing, construction, or electrical qualifications are especially valued)
- Assisting with table service during formal events
- Supporting housekeeping and cleaning sheds or garages
- Maintaining outdoor furniture and equipment (e.g., BBQs, lawnmowers)
